Fingerprinting, Fieldwork, and Student Teaching
Fingerprinting
New York State law requires fingerprinting as a means to perform criminal history background checks for applicants for certification and all prospective employees of school districts and charter schools within New York State. All students in teacher preparation programs need to be fingerprinted so that they are cleared to work with children in various settings including New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) public schools, charter networks, and other organizations. Fingerprint clearance is a professional expense related to certification. As such, candidates are responsible for related costs.
Undergraduate applicants and admitted graduate candidates who have never been fingerprinted for NYCPS are required to get fingerprinted by IdentoGO and have records transferred to NYSED prior to enrollment in courses. To do so follow the steps below:

All fieldwork placements are arranged through the Office of Clinical Collaborations (OCC).
Candidates who are not employed full time in a school are placed in partner schools on Staten Island or Brooklyn. Candidates sign up through a link provided in each course where they rank preference for placement. Once placed, each candidate is required to reach out to the contact person provided by the OCC to arrange specifics details of the assignment. Candidates will also receive a letter of introduction to bring with them on the first day of fieldwork each semester.
Note: Candidates are not guaranteed a placement in the first choice school, but will be placed in one of their choices. Some courses require fieldwork at specific sites to be shared during the first 2 weeks of class on Brightspace. The OCC is unable to accommodate placement preferences other than those who have approved accommodations with the Office of Accessibility Services.
Candidates who are employed full time in a school can conduct fieldwork at their school but need to coordinate with the OCC to ensure the placement meets state requirements.
All candidates are required to complete electronic timesheets documenting completed hours in the field.
Note: Education is a clinical profession. You MUST do the allotted fieldwork as per state regulations. There are no exceptions, including for those who work full time outside of a school setting. Contact Dr. Deirdre Armitage prior to applying if you have concerns about meeting the fieldwork requirement.
Student Teaching
The student teaching experience is the culmination of your program and prepares you to take on your own classroom. Candidates synthesize information learned during their program and use it in new and interesting ways in classrooms which they, in part, become responsible for. This experience is a major step in the transition from teacher candidate to teacher. The following list details the requirements during the student teaching experience:
Candidates are placed by the Office of Clinical Collaborations in a school where they work full-time for 14-15 weeks for a total of 400 hours. Each candidate experiences two grade levels appropriate for their program, each for 7 weeks and is formally observed a minimum of 4 times by their College supervisor; twice in each placement.
